About Glen Lyon
Glen Lyon is a village and census-designated place in Newport Township, Luzerne County. It grew up around 1869 as anthracite mining opened in the township and took its name from the Lyon family, the valley's leading landholders, which the railroad also hung on its station here.
The Susquehanna Coal Company, a Pennsylvania Railroad property, ran the mines here. Its Sixth Shaft colliery breaker, built in the 1880s, shut down in the late 1960s and burned in 1974. Deep mining had already declined after World War II and the 1959 Knox Mine Disaster.
