About Glen Lyon

Glen Lyon is a village and census-designated place in Newport Township, Luzerne County. It grew up around 1869 as anthracite mining opened in the township and took its name from the Glen Lyon rail station.

The Susquehanna Coal Company, a Pennsylvania Railroad property, ran the mines here. Its Sixth Shaft colliery breaker, built in 1887, closed in 1971 and burned in 1974. Deep mining had already declined after World War II and the 1959 Knox Mine Disaster.

Glen Lyon sits southwest of Wilkes-Barre near Nanticoke and had 1,877 residents in 2020. Its housing is coal-era frame homes and doubles at some of the lowest prices in the county, a market shaped by its mining past and small size.
