About East Stroudsburg
East Stroudsburg is a borough in Monroe County, near the Delaware Water Gap. It was first known as Dansbury, tied to Daniel Brodhead, who bought land here in 1737. The borough incorporated on May 23, 1870, and is now the largest of Monroe County's four boroughs.
Growth came with the Delaware, Lackawanna and Western Railroad, which arrived in 1856 and made East Stroudsburg the industrial center of the county. Railroad-era factories included a brewery, a tannery, a match factory, a silk mill, and a glassworks.

East Stroudsburg University began in 1893 as the East Stroudsburg Normal School, a private teacher-training school. It became a state teachers college, then East Stroudsburg State College in 1960, and East Stroudsburg University in 1983. The university enrolls around 5,600 students. Served by US 209 and near Interstate 80, the borough is the commercial core of the eastern Poconos, about 40 miles southeast of Scranton.
