About Dallas Township

Dallas Township was formed in 1817 out of Kingston Township and, like the borough it wraps on three sides, is named for Alexander J. Dallas. Its 2020 population was 9,099, making it the largest municipality in the Back Mountain.

The township is home to Misericordia University, founded in 1924 by the Religious Sisters of Mercy as College Misericordia. Most of the campus lies within the township.

Dallas Township shares the Dallas School District and includes the village of Kunkle. U.S. Representative Rob Bresnahan is from the township.

The southern end, closer to Dallas Borough, is densely built suburban neighborhoods. The northern end opens into farmland and forest. That split gives the market range, from established subdivisions near the college to acreage and country properties farther out, all inside a top-rated school district northwest of Wilkes-Barre.
