About Covington Township
Covington Township was established in 1818, formed from Wilkes-Barre Township when the area was still part of Luzerne County. It is named for Brigadier General Leonard Covington, a cavalry officer of the War of 1812.
The township grew on land Philadelphia merchant Henry Drinker bought in 1787, a timbered tract known as Drinker's Beech. Timber was the first industry. The Delaware, Lackawanna and Western Railroad laid track through the township in 1856 to carry anthracite east.

North Pocono High School is located in Covington Township, and the Lackawanna College Environmental Education Center operates here. The township includes the village of Daleville and the Eagle Lake community, with Big Bass Lake just over the line in Clifton Township. It sits southeast of Scranton in Lackawanna County, in the Pocono uplands above 1,800 feet in elevation. Its population was 2,198 at the 2020 census. Wooded lots and lakeside homes give it a rural, recreational character.
