About Conyngham

Conyngham was incorporated as a borough in 1921. It is named for Captain Gustavus Conyngham, a Revolutionary War privateer, at the suggestion of his cousin Redmond Conyngham. The 2020 population was 1,825.

The borough sits in the Conyngham Valley just northwest of Hazleton and is entirely surrounded by Sugarloaf Township. It serves as one of the greater Hazleton area's most desirable suburban addresses.

Conyngham is part of the Hazleton Area School District. A monument in the borough marks the 1780 Sugarloaf Massacre, which took place in the surrounding valley during the Revolutionary War.

Housing here is largely single-family and suburban, on tree-lined streets in the valley below the city. It commands stronger prices than the coal-era boroughs on the mountain, drawing Hazleton-area buyers who want a quieter, greener setting.
