Clifton Township occupies the southeastern corner of Lackawanna County, on the edge of the Pocono plateau where the county meets Wayne and Monroe Counties. It was settled in 1815 and officially organized on December 14, 1875, when it was set off from Covington Township.
The township's early economy ran on hunting, logging, and small-scale trade in rugged, forested country. Its first settler, Jacob Gress, was a noted hunter who opened the area's first tavern. Part of the township is served by the Gouldsboro post office, named for financier Jay Gould, who ran a tannery in the area before his rise on Wall Street.
Clifton covers just under 20 square miles at an elevation of about 1,765 feet, and it recorded 1,494 residents at the 2020 census. Big Bass Lake, a private residential and recreational lake community in the eastern part of the township, holds most of that population. Interstate 380 runs through the area, linking it to Scranton to the north and Interstate 80 and the Poconos to the south.
Housing here is heavily seasonal and second-home oriented, centered on gated lake developments and wooded lots, with year-round residents mixed in. It appeals to buyers looking for recreation property or a quiet base at the line between Lackawanna County and the Poconos.
