Clarks Summit traces to William Clark, a Revolutionary War veteran who settled the Abington wilderness in 1799. The village grew into a Scranton commuter suburb after the Northern Electric Railway trolley reached it in the early 1900s, and it incorporated as a borough on August 30, 1911.
Clarks Summit is the commercial center of the Abingtons, the cluster of suburbs north and northwest of Scranton. Its walkable downtown along State Street is known for independent shops rather than chains.
The borough is served by the well-regarded Abington Heights School District and the Abington Community Library. Clarks Summit University, founded in 1932 as a Baptist seminary, operated here until it closed in 2024. Natives include Olympic figure skater Adam Rippon and author Lauren Weisberger.
Clarks Summit sits about 7 miles northwest of Scranton in Lackawanna County, near Interstate 81 and the Turnpike. Its population was 5,108 at the 2020 census. It is one of the area's most sought-after suburbs, with housing that ranges from 1920s cottages to custom Colonial homes.
