Canadensis is a community in Barrett Township, Monroe County, at the intersection of Route 447 and Route 390. It is named for Tsuga canadensis, the eastern hemlock, the tree whose bark supplied the local tanning trade.
Barrett Township formed in 1859 and was named for George Rodden Barrett, a president judge of Monroe County. Tanneries and mills built the early economy, and railroad access through nearby Cresco brought resort and boarding-house tourism.
Often called the heart of the Poconos, Canadensis is home to summer camps and retreats, including Camp Canadensis and Spruce Lake Retreat. The village is oriented to local needs, with small shops, restaurants, and churches, and it draws outdoor recreation and seasonal visitors to the surrounding woods.
