About Bushkill

Bushkill is a community in Lehman Township, Pike County, along the Delaware River in the eastern Poconos. The name is Dutch, joining bush to kill, a creek or stream channel, the root found in place names across the old New Netherland region.

Bushkill Falls, known as the Niagara of Pennsylvania, opened to the public in 1904 under Charles E. Peters and stayed in the Peters family for generations. The site strings together eight waterfalls, the tallest a 100-foot drop.

Much of Bushkill lies within or beside the Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area. Part of the community was taken by the federal government during the abandoned Tocks Island Dam project and folded into the recreation area. US 209 runs through town, northeast of East Stroudsburg. The economy runs on the Bushkill Falls attraction along with resort and vacation-home communities near the national recreation area.
