About Bear Creek
Bear Creek Township was organized in 1856 and named for Bear Creek, a tributary of the Lehigh River. At roughly 68 square miles it is the largest municipality by area in Luzerne County. Bear Creek Village split off as its own borough in the early 1990s, established in 1992 and seating its first officials in 1993. The township's 2020 population was 2,754, the village's 291.
It lies about 10 miles southeast of Wilkes-Barre on the wooded fringe of the Pocono plateau. Much of the township is forest, state game land, lakes, and the Francis E. Walter Dam and Reservoir.

Lumberman Albert Lewis bought more than 12,000 acres here starting in 1880 and was the largest lumber manufacturer in the Wyoming Valley, with mills at Bear Creek and along the Lehigh at Hickory Run and White Haven. He founded the Bear Creek Ice Company in 1895, shipping ice by rail, and built a Tudor-style mansion in the village. The Bear Creek Village Historic District preserves his mills and the summer cottages built by Wilkes-Barre's elite.
That heritage still defines the market. Housing runs to wooded estates, log and custom homes, and lakefront property on large private lots. It is one of the region's most desirable rural-upscale addresses, a wooded retreat within reach of Wilkes-Barre.
