About Ashley

Ashley was first settled in 1830 and incorporated as a borough in 1870. It lies at the foot of Wilkes-Barre Mountain, about a mile south of the city.

Coal built and sustained Ashley well into the 20th century, and its population peaked at 7,039 in 1930. The Ashley Planes, a series of inclined railroad planes first built in the 1840s, hauled loaded coal cars up and over Wilkes-Barre Mountain. The Huber Breaker, built in 1939, processed coal here until it closed in 1976 and was demolished in 2014.

Actor Russell Johnson of Gilligan's Island and Olympic sprinter Walter Tewksbury came from Ashley. The borough had 2,596 residents in 2020 and is served by the Hanover Area School District. Its housing is dense coal-era frame homes and doubles at affordable prices close to Wilkes-Barre.
