About Ashley
Ashley was first settled in 1830 and incorporated as a borough in 1870. It lies at the foot of Wilkes-Barre Mountain, about a mile south of the city.
Coal built and sustained Ashley well into the 20th century, and its population peaked at 7,093 in 1930. The Ashley Planes, a series of inclined railroad planes first built in the 1840s, hauled loaded coal cars up and over Wilkes-Barre Mountain. The Huber Breaker, built in 1939, processed coal here until it closed in 1976 and was demolished in 2014.
