About Archbald
Archbald was settled by Welsh farmers by the 1830s and incorporated as a borough in 1877, carved from Blakely Township. It is named for James Archbald, the engineer who built the Delaware and Hudson gravity railroad to the town and was elected the first mayor of Carbondale in 1851.
Coal mining was for decades almost the only industry. The White Oak colliery opened in the mid-1840s, and the Gravity Railroad tied the town to Carbondale, making it an important center in the mid-valley.

Archbald is home to Archbald Pothole State Park, which preserves a glacial pothole about 38 feet deep, discovered by a coal miner in 1884. The borough is part of the Valley View School District and includes the villages of Eynon and Sturges. Writer Anthony Esolen grew up in Archbald, and MLB pitcher Max Kranick, raised in nearby Jessup, played his high school ball at Valley View here.
Archbald sits about 10 miles northeast of Scranton along the Lackawanna River, in Lackawanna County, and is one of the larger boroughs by land area. Its population was 7,297 at the 2020 census. A mix of coal-era and newer homes makes it a stable, family-oriented Mid Valley market.
