Yatesville is a small borough in Luzerne County, in the Greater Pittston area. The first frame house went up in 1809, and the borough incorporated on May 20, 1878, after separating from Jenkins Township. It is named for Francis Yates, an English immigrant who came to America in 1817 and bought land here.
Coal came early to Yatesville. Yates and the Hale brothers are credited among the first to mine coal in the area, working an outcrop by ox team, and the Pennsylvania Coal Company kept a reservoir in the borough. Mining employed most residents through the anthracite years.
Yatesville covers about two-thirds of a square mile and had 638 residents in 2020, one of the smallest boroughs in the area. Its housing is a small stock of older homes, a quiet and affordable pocket just north of Pittston.
