About Wyoming Borough

Wyoming is a borough in Luzerne County on the west bank of the Susquehanna River, about five miles north of Wilkes-Barre. Its name comes from a Munsee word meaning roughly "at the big river flat." The borough incorporated in 1885.

The area is best known for the Battle of Wyoming on July 3, 1778, when Loyalist and Native forces under Major John Butler defeated Patriot militia from the valley. Roughly 300 defenders were killed in what became known as the Wyoming Massacre. The Wyoming Monument, an obelisk raised in the 1830s over the dead, stands in the borough and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
