About West Hazleton

West Hazleton was incorporated as a borough in 1887 and founded by Conrad Horn. The name is directional, marking the community just west of the city of Hazleton. Its 2020 population was 5,163.

Like its larger neighbor, West Hazleton grew as an anthracite mining town before shifting to manufacturing and commerce after the coal era. It shares the high ground of the greater Hazleton plateau.

The borough is part of the Hazleton Area School District. Its population has grown again in recent decades after a long post-coal decline.
