Camelback Mountain and the Pocono Gateway Corridor
Tannersville is a community in Pocono Township, Monroe County, settled around 1750 by John Larner and first known as Pocono Point. It took the name Tannersville in the 19th century for the leather tanneries that ran on hemlock bark along Pocono Creek.
General John Sullivan camped here in June 1779 before his troops cut Sullivan's Trail through the wilderness. The village sits just off Interstate 80, about five miles west of Stroudsburg.
Tannersville is one of the busiest tourism corners of the Poconos. Camelback Mountain Resort opened its ski slopes on nearby Camelback Mountain, also called Big Pocono, in 1963. The Camelbeach outdoor waterpark followed in 1998 and the Aquatopia indoor waterpark in 2015. Pocono Premium Outlets draws shoppers off the interstate. The Tannersville Cranberry Bog, the southernmost boreal bog in the eastern United States, sits nearby. The area blends resort and day-trip traffic with residential neighborhoods.
