About South Abington Township

South Abington Township was established in 1867 when the larger Abington region was subdivided. It lies in the Abingtons, the suburban cluster north and northwest of Scranton, and includes the village of Chinchilla.

Once rural, the township grew into a suburb as the Northern Electric trolley and later the highways connected it to the city. The northern end of the Pennsylvania Turnpike Northeast Extension terminates here.
