About Shavertown

Shavertown is a community in Kingston Township, Luzerne County, named for Philip Shaver, who bought the land in 1813. It is not a separate borough. The census counts it as a designated place within the township.

It sits about seven miles northwest of Wilkes-Barre along PA Route 309, in the built-up part of the Back Mountain. The 2020 population was 1,968.

The Back Mountain's first school, a log cabin, was built in the Shavertown area in 1816. Today the community is home to the Back Mountain Memorial Library and is served by both the Dallas and Lake-Lehman school districts.

Shavertown runs together with Trucksville just to its south. Housing is suburban Back Mountain, a mix of mid-century and newer homes on a compact footprint of just over a square mile. It offers Back Mountain schools close to the Wilkes-Barre job market.
