Ransom Township was settled by the Gardner family from Connecticut in 1769 and formed in 1849 from parts of Exeter and Newton townships. It is named for Captain Samuel Ransom, who was killed at the Battle of Wyoming in 1778.
The township lies along the Susquehanna River on the western edge of Lackawanna County, away from the coal fields of the Lackawanna Valley. Its early economy was rural and agricultural.
Ransom Township is served by the Abington Heights School District and includes the villages of Ransom and Milwaukee. It sits west of Scranton near Lackawanna State Park, in Lackawanna County. Its population was 1,401 at the 2020 census. Wooded hills, farmland, and low traffic define this quiet rural township within reach of the Scranton metro area.
