About Plains Township

Plains Township was organized on November 10, 1851 from parts of Wilkes-Barre and Pittston townships. Its name comes from Jacob's Plains, the level ground along the Susquehanna where a Delaware leader named Jacob once lived.

Anthracite mining and the canals and railroads that carried the coal built the township through the 19th and early 20th centuries. Deep mining ended across the region after the 1959 Knox Mine Disaster.

Plains Township borders Wilkes-Barre on the northeast and runs from the Susquehanna River up to Wyoming Mountain. Mohegan Pennsylvania, a casino and hotel complex on PA 315, opened in 2006. Hall of Fame pitcher Ed Walsh came from the township.

Its 2020 population was 9,816. The housing mixes coal-era homes with postwar and newer subdivisions across a wide range of prices.
