About Newfoundland

Newfoundland is a village in Dreher Township, Wayne County. The township incorporated in 1877 and is named for Samuel S. Dreher. Newfoundland is reported to have been settled in 1829.

Timber shaped the local economy, with sawmills, stick and toy factories, and the Ledgedale Tannery. Ice harvesting and maple production followed the seasons.

In the early 20th century, farm families turned their homes into summer boarding houses, and those grew into resorts and restaurants. Newfoundland sits about 25 miles southeast of Scranton on Routes 507, 191, and 447, near Promised Land State Park with Lake Wallenpaupack to the north. Today it is a rural village serving the vacation-home communities around it, and it hosts the Greene-Dreher-Sterling Fair each Labor Day weekend.
