Mayfield developed around 1880 and incorporated as a borough in 1881. It is named for Captain William A. May, who managed a local coal company operation.
Coal mining led the economy, with the Glenwood, Hillside, and Keystone collieries working within the borough. A silk mill and trolley service to Carbondale added to the town during its industrial years.
Mayfield sits about 14 miles northeast of Scranton along the Lackawanna River, in Lackawanna County, next to Jermyn and Carbondale. Its population was 1,763 at the 2020 census. It remains a small, quiet anthracite borough of coal-era homes near the head of the valley.
