About Kingston

Kingston was settled in 1771 and incorporated as a borough on November 23, 1857. It was named after Kingston, Rhode Island. The borough sits on the west bank of the Susquehanna River directly across from Wilkes-Barre.

Coal mining shaped Kingston through the 19th and early 20th centuries and wound down across the valley after the 1959 Knox Mine Disaster. In June 1972 Hurricane Agnes flooded the borough when the Susquehanna overran its banks, and President Richard Nixon toured the damage during the recovery.

Kingston is home to Wyoming Seminary, a college preparatory school founded in 1844. Bodybuilder Frank Zane and entertainer Edie Adams came from the borough.

With 13,349 residents in 2020, Kingston is the most populous borough in Luzerne County and a commercial center for the west side of the valley. Its housing stock is largely well-kept coal-era and early 20th-century homes, and its schools and walkable neighborhoods keep it one of the steadier markets in the area.
