About Hazle Township

Hazle Township was formed in 1839 from Sugarloaf Township and shares the hazel-bush origin of the Hazleton name. Its 2020 population was 10,150.

The township wraps around the city of Hazleton and the borough of West Hazleton. It contains the region's industrial parks and a scatter of old coal-patch villages, including Lattimer, Drifton, Ebervale, and Harleigh.

The 1897 Lattimer Massacre, one of the deadliest events in American labor history, took place in the township when deputies fired on unarmed striking miners. Actor Jack Palance was born in Lattimer Mines in 1919.

Hazle Township is the suburban and commercial ring of greater Hazleton. It holds much of the area's newer housing, retail, and warehouse employment, offering more modern homes and larger lots than the dense city blocks it surrounds.
