About Harding

Harding is a community in Exeter Township, Luzerne County, on the west bank of the Susquehanna River upriver from Pittston. It is named for the Harding family of early settlers. On June 30, 1778, Stukely and Benjamin Harding were killed in a raid by Loyalists and their Native allies, and the cry "Remember the Hardings" rallied valley residents days before the Battle of Wyoming on July 3, 1778.

Exeter Township sits at the edge of the Appalachian Plateau, where the geology holds no coal. Harding grew as farm and forest country rather than a mining town. The township recorded about 2,050 residents in 2020.
