Greenfield Township was organized in January 1816 from the northern part of Abington Township, in what was then Luzerne County. It became part of Lackawanna County when that county was formed in 1878. The township sits in the rural northern reaches of the county.
It covers about 21.5 square miles of farmland, woods, and low ridges at roughly 1,350 feet of elevation, and recorded 2,268 residents at the 2020 census. Interstate 81 runs through the township, with a service plaza near milepost 202. On January 1, 1999, Greenfield became the first rural community in the United States to provide full street addressing.
Local institutions include the Greenfield Township Historical Museum and the annual Greenfield Day held each August. The township belongs to the Lakeland School District. Housing is rural and spread out, with farmhouses, ranch and split-level homes, and newer construction on multi-acre parcels, giving buyers land and quiet within commuting distance of Carbondale and Scranton.
