About Forty Fort

Forty Fort is named for the fort built around 1770 by forty of the first Connecticut settlers in the Wyoming Valley. On July 3, 1778 the Battle of Wyoming, also called the Wyoming Massacre, was fought nearby, and Forty Fort surrendered the following day. The borough was incorporated in 1887.

Coal mining shaped the borough through the industrial era, as it did the rest of the valley. Forty Fort sits on the west bank of the Susquehanna just north of Wilkes-Barre, on a floodplain now protected by a levee.
