About Exeter

Exeter is a borough on the west bank of the Susquehanna River in Luzerne County, within the Greater Pittston area. Connecticut settlers reached the surrounding Wyoming Valley beginning in 1769. The borough takes its name from Exeter in Devon, England, and incorporated in 1884.

Coal shaped Exeter as it did the rest of the valley. Anthracite moved out by canal in the 1830s and 1840s, and mining supported the town into the 20th century. Like its neighbors, Exeter lost underground workings to flooding after the 1959 Knox Mine Disaster.

NHRA Top Fuel champion Joe Amato and Navy nurse Ann Bernatitus, the first person awarded the Legion of Merit, were born in Exeter. The borough recorded 5,514 residents in 2020.

Exeter sits a few miles north of Wilkes-Barre and about 10 miles west of Scranton, strung along Wyoming Avenue with West Pittston, Wyoming, and West Wyoming. Its housing is mostly modest coal-era and mid-century homes, an affordable and convenient part of the west-side valley.
