Blakely Township was formed in 1818, and the borough of Blakely was incorporated on August 27, 1867. It is named for Johnston Blakely, a naval hero of the War of 1812 who captained the sloop USS Wasp.
Blakely sits in the heart of the northern anthracite field, and coal mining shaped its early economy. The borough includes the village of Peckville, its main commercial center, named for Samuel Peck, who built a saw and grist mill on the site in 1831.
The Johnston Blakeley Memorial displays a large anchor from the aircraft carrier USS Wasp, and the borough recreation complex sits along the Lackawanna River. Blakely is served by the Valley View School District. Natives include World War II Medal of Honor recipient Gino Merli and comic book artist Bill Sienkiewicz.
Blakely sits about 8 miles northeast of Scranton along the Lackawanna River, in Lackawanna County. Its population was 6,657 at the 2020 census. Peckville and the surrounding blocks offer coal-era housing with convenient valley access.
